This training will focus on rhythm, from musical cues to their corporal translation. The highlight of this workshop is the exploration of breathing techniques for dancers. Subdivided into three sections (warm-up, exercises, and incorporation), it borrows from modern dance, rumba, son, timba, Afro-Cuban religious heritage, West African dance, and yoga.

Maiensy began teaching
popular Cuban music and dance while working at the Instituto Tecnologico
y de Estudios Superiores (TEC) de Monterrey, Mexico, in 1996. She
created and developed a curriculum for the International Programs
department’s exchange students. In 1999, she pioneered the Cuban style
of dance instruction in the Seattle area. As a born-and-raised Cuban,
and having grown up in a family of stage artists, she adds her first-hand
experience to a class environment that is as meaningful as it is
entertaining. Her teaching style incorporates her background in
socio-cultural anthropology and 13 years of professional music training.
Her teaching method draws from her biological father, an established
stage actor, and her father Fernando Alonso, creator of the Cuban School
of Ballet and one of the founders of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, both
currently on the island. Maiensy has received training in ballet, jazz,
modern dance, flamenco and West African dance. She has performed at the
New Orleans International Ballet Conference (as dance partner/assistant

Salsa Casino Madness Welcomes Home Renato Party & Workshop

Yes Familia, it's been 2 years (just about) since our great friend and master Renato has been away from San Diego. He made a really great impression on the Casino Community when he was here and the great news, is that he will be visiting on the weekend of Nov 17th & 18th. The plan is to have a welcome home party on Sat 11/17 to celebrate having him in town, catch up, dance, drink and who knows what else!
on Sunday 11/18 there will be a 3-hour workshop, where he will be covering advanced casino and a few extra things that are sure to help you continue your amazing journey in the world of Cuban Salsa.
Renato has been dancing Cuban style (Casino,Rumba,Son, Cha Cha Cha)
since he was a teenager under Cuban Masters in Chile, where it is also
taught in the Universities. Has gone on to actually teach at the same
University as well as start his Team "Guayaberos" there. Where under his
teachings, have gone on to perform and compete. They have performed not
only for live audiences but on Chilean National Television as well. He
made his way to San Diego a few years ago and started a new "Guayaberos
TJ" along his Co-Directors Miroslava Wilson & David Mariano (2
amazing and accomplished dancers already ) also performing all over Baja
California,Mexico and even here in SD. He has such patience yet an
increadible amount of energy not easily rivalled when it comes to dance.
If you missed him when he was here before, here is a chance to meet,
dance, and learn from him, oh and party of course. For those who did
get to know him, it's a huge welcome home party reunion. Come join in
on the madness.

Curuye Cuban SalsaTimba Dance Party in LA -Sat, Sept 15th
Meet at the Oceanside Park & Ride at 5pm. We have five people going from San Diego: David Branch, Tava Chunn, Michelle Judge, Orlando & myself. Vidal, Eleanor, Nabia and a few others will be meeting us at the party. SD will be in da' house. Casineros from Atlanta, Seattle, Mt Vernon will also be there.

This event will happen twice with live Cuban music from Agogo Drum and Dance Ensemble and then from La Farandula! (timba band) with an open dance floor. Box Office for ticket purchasing opens on September 6th online, so get your tickets then because both days will fill up. No lie, Patriceanne Mead said this is an annual event and there are some die-hard fans from Palomar College and the local community who attend this each year so don't wait...get them quickly! Rueda Flash Mob at Jazz-at-the-Park this Friday, Aug 24th
Greetings Casineros!
Get you dancing feet ready for some fun before everyone goes back to school. This is the last Jazz-in-the-Park concert. This time is Latin music! Come dance to live salsa music this Friday, August 24th, with Johnny Polanco Y Su Conjunto Amistad.
We plan to conduct a rueda flash mob at 5:30pm sharp! So if you plan to be there, get there no later than 5:15pm. The song I will use the song "El Que Baila Gana" by Pedrito Calvo Y La Justicia. The lyrics start off saying "Que lo que pasa'qui!?" and that is your queue to get in circle formation and shout in response "EYYYY!". Then Pedrito will say it again, one last time and you should all be in "Tiempo de Espana" position, so make sure you know who your partner is to get in the rueda. This will be the only staged rueda. The rest of the ruedas will be when the orchestra is playing. I will lead a salsa suelta line while they are playing. It's gonna be exciting!
I will call basic moves from Tim's rueda class and a few of my own that you all know. We plan to have some of our people there early to grab some grass space and lay out blankets, so if you can come early come find us. I will wear a hot pink t-shirt so you can't miss me!!! hahahaha!

We plan to conduct a rueda flash mob at 5:30pm sharp! So if you plan to be there, get there no later than 5:15pm. The song I will use the song "El Que Baila Gana" by Pedrito Calvo Y La Justicia. The lyrics start off saying "Que lo que pasa'qui!?" and that is your queue to get in circle formation and shout in response "EYYYY!". Then Pedrito will say it again, one last time and you should all be in "Tiempo de Espana" position, so make sure you know who your partner is to get in the rueda. This will be the only staged rueda. The rest of the ruedas will be when the orchestra is playing. I will lead a salsa suelta line while they are playing. It's gonna be exciting!
I will call basic moves from Tim's rueda class and a few of my own that you all know. We plan to have some of our people there early to grab some grass space and lay out blankets, so if you can come early come find us. I will wear a hot pink t-shirt so you can't miss me!!! hahahaha!

Originally we were going to have it in Oceanside Harbor, but the community said lets meet in the middle, therefore, we will go back to Solana Beach. We'll be dancing on AstroTurf, so it will be good for our knees. All are welcome to dance with us!

If you've never been to a Casino on Cardboard event, it's basically a free Cuban salsa dance party on a cardboard dance floor. CELEBRATING THE ARRIVAL of SUMMER at CURUYE.COM’s OUTDOOR CUBAN SALSA TIMBA DANCE PARTY, featuring LIVE CUBAN TIMBA w/ ANTONIO SAUZA & MONEDA NACIONAL, and DJ SAOCO spinning between live sets!
CURUYE.COM is honored that ANTONIO SAUZA has chosen CURUYE’s CUBAN DANCE PARTY for his graduate performance with his timba band MONEDA NACIONAL, a presentation that culminates his AFRO LATIN MUSIC studies at CSULA for the Master’s in Music.
This first outdoor Curuye dance party of the year will open with Antonio singing for Eleggua of the Afro Cuban lucumí tradition, followed by a rumba, then LIVE TIMBA, and DJ SAOCO will do his thing between the live sets to keep us on the dance floor. Looking forward to KATI HERNÁNDEZ leading one of her HOT AFRO TIMBA LINES, and sharing a dance and some cake with KRYS, STEPHANIE & MARLON!
It all takes place on the beautiful patio of TRÓPICO de NOPAL GALLERY & ART SPACE in Echo Park, $10 cover. Chef KELLY will have a tasty plate available for purchase, and bartender RAY will be whipping out his incomparable mojitos!

Casino on Cardboard in La Jolla Shores Park - Sat, May 19th
We will set up on the sand, in the area between the lifeguard station and the bathroom/shower stations. There is free parking in the beach lot, which can get full on weekends, and off street. Feel free to bring any snacks and refreshments. Look for a bunch of people dancing on the beach, calling out Bullas, and music! This a is a family friendly event so bring the kids. be aware, there is still a lot construction going on so there will be obstacle in the to the path on the sand, but we'll be there with flip flops on!

What to bring: Beach chairs, sweater if it gets cold and any snacks you want to bring. We will provide water.
