Happy New Year in 2012: Special Message to All

My Dear San Diego Casino Familia,
Thank you so much for welcoming me with open arms. 2011 was a definitely a good year, full of change and growth for me personally. I tell my students back in my former job at a community college that change is good. I had to walk that talk this year and I have absolutely no regrets. Being here gives me hope to keep pushing the envelope for more timba in public venues,  bringing more people in our casino circles, collaborating more amongst all the casino and Afro Cuban dance instructors here, continue learning from others, and to keep building community in our dancing circles. This year ends with a lot of great goals and new working relationships with all the dance instructors. 2012 is going to be awesome.

Happy New Year!

Cafe Sevilla - Dec 21st - Second Chance For The DJ

Last week a group of us went to Cafe Sevilla per invite from David Stein who leads the mini-lesson for Cafe Sevilla. We went with the promise of playing some some from the DJ. I brought a CD with the hottest stuff from Cuba. I was met with resistance from the DJ to play our music. Needless to say, after an exchange of words, we did not hear any timba taht night. So, I believe in the power of the pen and wrote a bad review on Yelp and Facebook. After some healthy discussion behind closed doors, this last Wednesday, David stepped up and had DJ Bongo download the CD I gave them the last week.

So now it's round two at Cafe Sevilla and your all invited to come out and shake what your mama gave you Cuban style. I'll be prepared, in case of any resistance, with an extra CD, a iPod (w/ a cord) and a thumb drive with timba music for the DJ. It is FREE for each of us as long as we sign up on the guest list.

Here are the details:
When: Wednesday, December 21st; dancing begins at 9:30pm; Mini dance lesson by David Stein at 8:30pm
Where: The newly renovated Cafe Sevilla
How much?: FREE by getting on the Cafe Sevilla Guest List

I have a list of the songs on the CD I gave them and will hand out the listing of the tracks, so you can go ask the DJ to play a certain track. The more people who ask the DJ, the more they will play our music that we love so much.

See you on the dance floor! Una Bulla!

SALSAtlanta 10.2 Cuban Party - Black Friday Special $100 Off Today Only!

Greetings Casineros,
If you are willing to make a good investment of your dancing money for an excellent congress, Not only is this the best deal but it is where the East Coast casineros get their sabor in their styling and moves to keep you looking authentic to the Cuban style.  I went to this congress (Cuban Party) last year and it was awesome! If you can't make the San Francisco Rueda Festival, then consider this one and get a low price hotel in Downtown ATL and you will save a wackload of money. Even flights are cheaper if you fly from LAX to ATL.

People ask me, "Which one do you like most?" They are like apples and oranges, I like both of the festivals for different reasons. Here is a review from a fellow casinera from Seattle (a college English professor) who shared her experience at the SalsAtlanta 10.1 Cuban Party last year. Note, she has been to both festivals.  By the way, I use Cuban Party/Festival/ Congress interchangeably because they are synonyms. Check out their SalsAtlanta10.2 website for workshop details and schedule.

For those who want to know the basic details, here they are:
Who: SALSAtlanta.com (Atlanta's capital for rueda de casino)

Rueda Demo@ Encenitas Street Fair - Sunday, Nov 20th

Greetings Casineros,
Tim Snedeker from EnRuedameMas posted this:

"Several of us are meeting at 1pm at the Lumber Yard located at the south end of the Street Fair on Highway 101.  We will dance there a bit and possibly travel throughout the street fair demoing the dance at different locations so if you arrive well after 1 pm and don't see us at the Lumber Yard, just look around.  We may have traveled a bit.  The more people that come, the more attention we'll get.  I will just be calling normal rueda moves we all know.  The whole event is just a few blocks south of Encinitas Blvd on the Coast Highway.  If you have the time, come check it out. There was talk about rain but it looks as though there won't be rain. If it is raining, however, we won't be meeting at the fair at all."

Check back on the blog for updates. Here are the details:
When: Sunday, November 20, 2011

Rescheduling Casino on Cardboard Due to Rain Forecast

Greetings Casineros,
Looks like the weather is not behaving. There is a 70% change of rain to day and it will get worse during the late afternoon, the time I had planned for Casino on Cardboard, so we are rescheduling it for next Saturday, same time, same place. Hopefully the weather will be on our side. Thank you to all who were planning on going and volunteering to help beforehand. Casino on Cardboard will persist!

Welcome to San Diego Rueda Community Blog

Greetings Casineros,
My name is Maritza and I am a proud and enthusiastic casinera. I love Cuban music and dance. This is space will honor the great efforts in San Diego to promote the music and dance we love most a lo Cubano. Our Cuban community, dance instructors, local casineros, and our casino familia from around the US and around the world will have access to post. This is a place to discuss, appreciate and learn more about Cuban music and dance. There will be a video of the week posted. There will be announcements on rueda practices and events around San Diego. If there are Cuban events in Tijuana, Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, San Francisco...they are welcome to announce on this blog. NOT everyone is on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, MeetUp, or Google+, so this blog will be a place to get information on events and news update in the Cuban dance and music community. We also will announce any Cuban art shows. We need to support our artists, bands, dancers and local Cuban restaurants.  Bienvenidos! Looking forward to see your posts.
