Happy New Year in 2012: Special Message to All

My Dear San Diego Casino Familia,
Thank you so much for welcoming me with open arms. 2011 was a definitely a good year, full of change and growth for me personally. I tell my students back in my former job at a community college that change is good. I had to walk that talk this year and I have absolutely no regrets. Being here gives me hope to keep pushing the envelope for more timba in public venues,  bringing more people in our casino circles, collaborating more amongst all the casino and Afro Cuban dance instructors here, continue learning from others, and to keep building community in our dancing circles. This year ends with a lot of great goals and new working relationships with all the dance instructors. 2012 is going to be awesome.

Happy New Year!

Cafe Sevilla - Dec 21st - Second Chance For The DJ

Last week a group of us went to Cafe Sevilla per invite from David Stein who leads the mini-lesson for Cafe Sevilla. We went with the promise of playing some some from the DJ. I brought a CD with the hottest stuff from Cuba. I was met with resistance from the DJ to play our music. Needless to say, after an exchange of words, we did not hear any timba taht night. So, I believe in the power of the pen and wrote a bad review on Yelp and Facebook. After some healthy discussion behind closed doors, this last Wednesday, David stepped up and had DJ Bongo download the CD I gave them the last week.

So now it's round two at Cafe Sevilla and your all invited to come out and shake what your mama gave you Cuban style. I'll be prepared, in case of any resistance, with an extra CD, a iPod (w/ a cord) and a thumb drive with timba music for the DJ. It is FREE for each of us as long as we sign up on the guest list.

Here are the details:
When: Wednesday, December 21st; dancing begins at 9:30pm; Mini dance lesson by David Stein at 8:30pm
Where: The newly renovated Cafe Sevilla
How much?: FREE by getting on the Cafe Sevilla Guest List

I have a list of the songs on the CD I gave them and will hand out the listing of the tracks, so you can go ask the DJ to play a certain track. The more people who ask the DJ, the more they will play our music that we love so much.

See you on the dance floor! Una Bulla!

Casino on Cardboard in La Jolla Shores Park - Sunday, Dec 11th

We're taking it to the . . . beach, again, with December's installment of Casino on Cardboard at La Jolla Shores beach! Let's keep this fun-packed event started by Maritza going, this time down in beautiful La Jolla Shores.

We will be dancing Casino & Salsa on cardboard... planks and soak in the sun and ocean air, while having a blast to the best music! Everyone is welcome, this is a fun, no pressure activity, regardless of your dance level. We will dance with each other and all together in Ruedas, San Diego style!

We will set up on the sand, in the area between the lifeguard station and the bathroom/shower stations. There is free parking in the beach lot, which can get full on weekends, and off street. Feel free to bring any snacks and refreshments to consume--no alcohol. Look for a bunch of people dancing on the beach, calling out Bullas, and music! See you guys on Sunday! Una Bulla!!

Approximate address of the beach: 8287 La Vereda, San Diego, California, United States.
