The 8th Annual San Francisco Salsa Rueda Festival - Feb 11th - 14th

It's not too late to get your tickets for the largest Salsa/casino/rueda festival in the US. Incredible dance instructors, the dancing parties are out of this world and the live music is awesome. 

If you are looking to learn casino, they have a beginner's track taught by amazing casino/rueda instructors from all over the US. If you are a salsero, this bootcamp is for you! Rueda at Balboa Park - Sun. Dec 20th

Casineros have been asking for this in San Diego! Ruchi and I are going to lead this effort. Come dance with us for a couple of hours in Balboa Park next to the Bea Everson Fountain on the Prado Walk side (See Picture below). Consider this a rueda "practice" not so much as a class for beginners, but a review of rueda moves, for all. We will let you know if a rueda is a beginner level or an intermediate level. We just want to dance as much as possible to warm up on some cold days to come this winter.

Summer may be over and so will Fall but....it's San Diego....we can still dance outside and work up a good sweat.  Casineros will be in the crowd.

There is no class given at this location but there are always instructors on hand that can recommend a class. Look for us on the North side of the pier just in front of the grassy area. Una bulla!

Combo Libertad, North County San Diego's very own "son" band is playing again at Club M at the Hotel Grand Del Mar on Thursday, December 17th! Combo Libertad will be playing live that night so you can get your "son" on. DJ will play regular salsa and bachata, probably no timba but its a chance to dance casino with some friends. This is also Isela's birthday soiree meet up so come wish her a happy birthday.

Beginners Cuban Salsa class has a new structure now. It will be a casino footwork/partner work class. There may be some time for rueda at the end of the class, but the idea is to dance one-on-one to achieve technique. I will have the list of the 9 basic moves on the wall and use video recordings of you to assess and offer feedback. Each session will be focused on 1 to 3 of the moves listed below until it can be done with 1-hand connection, 2-hand connection, no-hand connection, finding the beat, effective dance communication for both lead and follow and arriving in the right positioning for casino and rueda de casino. If I see you have mastered all the 9 moves listed below, have found the beat, mastered good dance communication with your partner, I will invite you to the intermediate level class.
Criteria for Beginners to master before entering intermediate level casino/rueda:
- Leads & Follows walking forward (minimizing the BACK STEP)
- Keeping time with the music
- Leads & Follows need to know the 9 basic steps and know their positioning in the rueda with the following moves:

• Guapea/Basico Cubano
• Enchufla
• Exhibela
• Vacilela
• Coca Cola
• Adios /Prima
• Traslado
• Setenta
• Ronde footwork

Maritza's New Intermediate/Advanced Level Class:

There will be no announcement about it on the Dancessense Studios webpage as I am only renting the space for a specialized level of casino/rueda.

If you have done casino/rueda before but you are rusty, please do not enter the intermediate level until I have given you the green light to enter. If I see you struggling in the intermediate level class, I will kindly ask you to step out of the rueda and sit it out and will provide you feedback what you need to improve on. I may ask you to return to the beginners rueda class. My rationale for this strict rule is to improve the transition from beginner to intermediate level of casino. Plus, it disrespects the intermediate level casino dancer who paid me a fee to be challenged. My hope is that we as a San Diego Casino dance community can truly improve our technique with casino.

    During the dance party there will be a special show by Violeta Salsera of Afro Y Pasion.

AZUCAR!!! Join us Friday November 13th for “NOCHE CUBANA” brought to you by Esteban Conde at the beautiful Marriott Hotel in Irvine. Robert Morales and Laura Cristina from Rueda in the Park - Santa Ana will be teaching a Rueda de Casino class and will showcase a Rueda de Casino group performance. Salsa and Bachata Class, Beginner level with Heather, Intermediate/Advance level with Esteban.

This series of classes is designed for newcomers to Afro-Cuban dance as well as any intermediate/adv. who wish to improve their form.  Come explore movements from ancient traditions of West African ethnic groups as preserved in Cuba for 500+ years as you strengthen and invigorate your body.

Casinero Invasion at Super Salsa Sunday in Carlsbad's Dancessense Studios - Sun. Oct. 4th

Oye Mi Gente!
Remember the times of Salsa Sundays at the Ocean House and Q Bar? Well, there is an effort to revive this at Dancessense Studios in Carlsbad. There is no entertainment production involved, just Dancessense Studio taking the lead to make something happen. There will be a salsa lesson by William Valencia and DJ Martin El Travieso will be spinning the music. There is no guarantee if DJ Travieso will play timba,  but you can surely ask him to play. I have already reached out to him with an offer to bring him some Cuban salsa on MP3's. It's up to him if he plays it. Regardless of what music the DJ plays, we should support this effort because it's a heartfelt effort to make something happen in North County.

Casino on Concrete at Oceanside Pier Amphitheater - Sat. Oct 3rd

Que Bola Mi Gente!
Ready to cool off outside again and dance at sunset? We are taking it all the way up to North County San Diego at Oceanside Pier Amphitheater. We had to change the location because Maritza's car broke down for good so there is no way to carry the cardboard floor. BUT, we are still dancing....on concrete. The amphitheatre has a lot of space to dance and great for pictures.

Here are the details:
What: Casino on Concrete (Cuban dance party)
When: Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 5pm-7:30pm
Where: Oceanside Pier Amphitheater - 200 N the Strand, Oceanside, CA 92054
There is parking just across the street  for $6-$8 for the day so carpool together if you can.

This is a free event and it is family friendly. So bring the kids!
It is a snack-luck, so bring something to share and bring some water or any beverage you like. 

I'll be leading salsa suelta lines and calling some ruedas. So come and enjoy dancing outside to natural air-conditioning. The sun will set around 6:30pm on that day.

 ★ FREE End of Summer Salsa Party ★ Come dance salsa outdoors at this FREE event sponsored by the Segerstrom Center for the Arts ★ ALL AGES WELCOME ~ Bring the kids!

 Orange County meets San Diego, Los Angeles and Inland Empire Dancers at this FREE Salsa event. There are no restrictions on bringing food or drinks so let's make this a big potluck picnic. 

There will also be food trucks available that day and I was told that they will provide a dance floor. If not, it is very smooth concrete. 

This is part of the Jazz Weekend Series, so there is dancing Friday, Saturday & Sunday. This invite is specifically for Sunday as the Buena Vista Social Club will be having their concert. For info click this link.

There are also two very good Cuban restaurants very close by if you want to get take out.
