Join us in celebration of Cuban music and dance in the US! We've grown to become the largest Cuban music and dance festival in the US. We've grown from 3 nights, 2 days, 3 classes at a time, 2 live bands, and 1 Hotel to 4 nights of non-stop dance and partying, 3 days of dance Workshops, 6 classes each hour to choose from, 4 Live Bands and 2 Hotels to house all the excitement. Each and every year our international guests and performers grows!! We hope this event supports and contributes to the ongoing growth of the Cuban salsa community in the United States and throughout the World. As always, each year the festival showcases new groups. Come prepared to get up and dance when the Athenaeum’s jazz program returns to the San Diego studio of the Athenaeum School of the Arts (4441 Park Boulevard) for a San Diego debut performance by leading NYC-based Afro-Cuban percussionist/vocalist Pedrito Martinez, joined by his bandmates Ariacne Trujillo on keyboard and vocals, Alvaro Benavides on electric bass and vocals, and Jhair Sala on percussion and vocals. The Pedrito Martinez Group has emerged as the tightest Afro-Cuban band in New York. Their shows ignite a devoted fan base that has spread to include Eric Clapton, Taj Mahal, Roger Waters, and Wynton Marsalis. The ensemble has its roots planted firmly in the rumba tradition, and revels in the bata rhythms and vocal chants of Yoruban and Santeria music. Among their many fans is guitar legend John Scofield, who commented, “Pedrito and the band are virtuosi of the first order. But even more striking is how they work together as a unit. They are one of the greatest groups playing today. I’ve learned so much from hearing and from playing with them.” The New York Times wrote, “Since arriving in the United States at the end of the 1990s, the Cuban percussionist Martinez has been all over the place, putting rumba and guaguancó into the weave of all kinds of groups… when his drums, singing and writing are the focus, he’s an incomparable performer.”

Unbelievably fun the entire night. Rumbankete was amazing (the live timba band from LA). So many great dancers out there and the salsa suelta lines were the biggest I have ever seen...I mean...take a look at the promo picture below of the November Curuye party...that's how big it was!!! It is THEE best Cuban salsa party in Southern California. Don't miss out! We are getting a good dosage of live son music in November. This time, Combo Libertad, North County San Diego's very own "son" orchestra is playing at Tio Leo's on Friday, November 8th. If you love Cuban music, you have to see this orchestra. They are awesome and love the casineros who dance in front of them. Remember, there is a strong marriage between the musicians and the dancers. If you know the musical structure of Cuban "son" music and you can attack the clave beat with your feet dancing on-4...you will make the musicians smile. Heck they will smile if you dance to their music regardless, but really if you can dance to 4th beat...it's like getting a high in your ears. I can certainly help you find that 4th beat. We are back on the AstroTurf for this November's installment of Casino on Cardboard  in Solana Beach at our favorite spot.

The sun will set a little earlier so arrive on time to enjoy plenty of sunshine. It will be the day before DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME. All the more reason to enjoy one last sunset relatively early. October Casino on Cardboard at Oceanside Harbor - Sat. Oct 5th

It's that time again to dance outside. We're getting the cardboard out so we can dance as the sun goes down in Oceanside Harbor!!!

Here are the details:

What: Casino on Cardboard at Oceanside Harbor
When: Saturday, October 5th from 5pm-7pm
Where: Oceanside Harbor Beach (from the I-5, exit Oceanside Harbor and go west. If you go east you end up at Camp Pendleton

Here is the link to the location/directions on Google Maps. We will be at a different place from last time, closer to where they wash the boats. This map is specifically made to show you exactly where we will be on the sand.

This is a free event and it is family friendly. It is a snack-luck, so bring something to share and bring some water or any beverage you like. I have new playlist and a the rock blocker readily charged up so we could keep dancing for a long long time.

I'll be leading a few salsa suelta lines and calling some ruedas. Come and cool off by the sea and enjoy dancing outside to natural air-conditioning especially made by the Pacific Ocean.

Yes, we know it's last minute but so was our confirmation to perform at this event. Cubata (Wilfredo's Cuban Dance Performance Team) will be performing at the Salsa Fixation Dance Company Social in Miramesa (San Diego). Below are the details that were advertised to the public. If you can make it, come cheer us on! There is dancing afterwards but I can not guarantee there will be timba, but "you-know-who" who's going make some suggestions to the DJ.

Casino on Cardboard in Coronado Beach set for Saturday, August 10, 2013

Greetings Casineros!

Before the summer passes by so fast with so much to do, please mark your calendars for Casino on Cardboard at Coronado Beach on Saturday, August 10th from 5-8pm. This is one of our favorite spots in San Diego.
This is the Augusts installment of Casino on Cardboard and we are taking it back to Coronado Beach to watch the sun go down, dance and be among our dancing familia. So come by and dance and share good times in one of the most beautiful beach sites in San Diego. 

When: Saturday, August 10th from 5pm to 8pm
Set up is at 4pm (I need at least 3 to 4 people for help)
Where: Coronado Beach across from Sunset Park in Coronado
Sunset Park address is 101 Ocean Boulevard, Coronado, CA

Here is what I need, someone to help me unload the floor and tape it up at 4pm. I'll meet you at Sunset Park in Coronado Beach (same place we had it before).

We also need a portable table for food and drinks and a cooler with ice and a couple of trashbags.

Come by and bring some snack or drinks, beach towels or beach chairs, a sweater or sweatshirt as it will get cold later as the sun goes down.

I'll be leading a few suelta lines and some ruedas ( will have some new moves to share from the Las Vegas Rueda Festival.  Pura vida!

Sorry everyone for the sudden location change, but we are combining forces with a birthday bash for Christina Picardi, one of our devoted casineras and supporter of many of our Cuban events. We will celebrate wit her as she has reserved a bonfire pit on La jolla Shores Beach. We will go to Coronado Beach in August.

LA JOLLA SHORES IS ON! Come watch the sun go down, dance and be among our dancing familia, share good times in one of the most beautiful beach sites in San Diego.
When: Saturday, July 13th 5pm to 9pm

Cost: Maritza is kindly asking for a donation as she pays the rent for a storage unit to store the cardboard, and other equipment, the fancy Casino on Cardboard signage and also to help with the future purchase of a snap-together dance floor for future dance parties at the beach.

Here is what I need, 

Two people to help me unload the floor and tape it up at 4:30pm. I'll meet you at the La Jolla Shores Park Parking Lot.

We also need  a cooler with ice and water and a couple of trash bags.
