We are moving on with Maritza's Intermediate Series to Level 3. If you took Intermediate Level 2, Level 2.1 and 2.2, we have now reached Intermediate Level 3.

Made for students who are currently taking Maritza's intermediate LEVEL 1, 2, 2.1, & 2.2.s Maritza believes in teaching the Lego pieces of intermediate moves such as casino "add-ons" and then pulls from her dance training in Cuba to teach technique and different way to execute a typical intermediate move. In essence, if you know the basics, intermediate and advanced moves are a combination of the basic casino moves.

CURUYE's CUBAN SALSA TIMBA DANCE PARTY with DEEJAY WARAPO celebrates CUBAN MUSIC & DANCE, and this month 'las aguas', the deities of the sea, and of the rivers and lakes, from Cuba's Yoruba tradition.

At 5:30 PM, KATI HERNÁNDEZ will teach some traditional Afro Cuban movements that are sometimes incorporated into popular Cuban dance.

In addition to dancing CASINO (Cuban salsa), we'll be also dancing some fun and funky reggaetón lines throughout the evening!

September brings a lot of birthdays to celebrate!  KARLA MICHELLE, ALMA ÁLVAREZ, RICARDO SALAZAR, JESÚS ORNELAS, AFIMAYE GALARRAGA, PEDRO 'MUÑECO AGUILAR... will be among those dancing the birday dance! If you have a September birthday that you would like to celebrate, let Curuye know!

KATI HERNÁNDEZ will kick off the party teaching some Cuban dance moves to spice up your dancing at 5:30 PM. To add to the evening’s activities, KAREN POWELL, AMY HARTENDORP, RUBY ROJAS, TAMI GUNTON-NAVARRO, & MARTIN GUNTON-NAVARRO will be dancing the birthday dance and sharing some cake with you! La GOZADERA (CUBAN SALSA party) is back this August with special guest Master Instructor KATI HERNANDEZ! 

Kati was born and raised in CUBA, she currently teaches in LA Orisha therapy and casino. She is a treat to have in San Diego, she will be teaching a Timba Fusion class with AFRO and RUMBA!!! This a class you don’t want to miss, her technique will improve your social skills and get your upper body going to the sounds/breaks of the music. Kati will also be leading salsa suelta lines and getting everyone on the dance floor, no previous experience or partner needed.

August edition of Casino on Grass!! This time at La Jolla Shores. Don’t miss the beautiful views, dancing with friends and enjoying the sunset. Bring a dish to share, this is a free event so there is no cover.

Hike n Rueda at Volcan Mountain Trail - Sun. May 26th

If you haven't been on this trail, it is very scenic and you can see into the Anza Borrego Desert.  Plenty of places to dance rueda on this hike. Don't forget to bring a camera!

I have just opened registration for my Beginner Level 1 Series from brand new dancers and anyone who wants to go through it again to hone in on the footwork and dance communication with your partner. The series is the beginning series of a 4 to 5-month commitment all the way to basic intermediate. Each month is a level and the teaching build off the previous month of training. So if you are ready to jump in, this is your one chance this year as this will be the only entrance to learn as a beginner for the remaining of the year, so don't procrastinate.

I am hoping all of you consider going to this event because they have incredible dance instructors who teach with technique on casino and rueda. I have gone in the past to their 3-Day Cuban parties and it just seems that every dancer is sooo good, and it is a reflection of their teachers. I plan to go! so if anyone is interested, please let me know so we can look at flights together and plan accommodations as well. It's cheaper to share expenses for traveling if we do this together.

Seattle Cuban Dance Fest - July 11-14th

Greetings Casineros,
For those of you looking to travel to learn to dance Cuban, here is a festival that is on its 3rd round of offering dance workshops and dance parties in the beautiful Seattle location of the University of Washington Seattle. This is the best time to travel out to the Northwest because of all the long daylight each day offers. The sun goes down at 10:30pm!!!! I know, right!??? This is where I modeled our Casino on Cardboard idea that I implemented in San Diego. They do Casino on Cardboard every Friday in the summer and it will be there during this festival. Start saving your vacation accrual for work or if you have the time and $$, you should make a trip to check this out.  I already have my pass. Last year, I went for the first time and I absolutely loved it!! They offer dorm accommodations on the campus to make it convenient for walking to the workshops. Ask me (Maritza) about this event because I can tell you how to prepare.

Hansel Melgares was born in La Vibora «barrio» of Havana, Cuba. He is a master Cuban instructor, DJ, performer of traditional Cuban dances such as rumba, son, timba, casino, and folkloric Afro Yoruba dances.

He built his own dance academies (3) in Sardinia, Italy, where he has taught for twelve years. In 2009 he participated in Timbalaye, a biannual international festival in his hometown of Havana. There he taught alongside other master instructors like Domingo Pau, Ulises Mora, and Irma Castillo.

In 2010 he performed at Sistina Theatre in Rome with Clave de Son Academy. He taught from 2005 to 2013 at the event «De Cuba para el mundo» in Sardinia. He has taught at the San Francisco Salsa Rueda Festival from 2015 to 2019 and Albuquerque Latin Festival 2017.

La Gozadera Cuban Nights in Escondido - Sat. Mar 2nd

San Diego Casineros have joined forces to bring north county just what everyone has been asking for.  DJ Warapo from LA will be spinning the latest in Cuban music with some good ol’ classics. Beginner Level 2 will be focused on basic turn patterns (Adios/Prima, Pa'bajo, Exhibela and, if there is time, Vacilala
