Cuban Immersion Weekend Workshops With Maiensy Sanchez Dec 1-2

Anyone who loves Cuban Music, Dance and Culture should come to this! Salsa dancers (on-1 or on-2 or on anything are very welcomed! Maiensy Sanchez is a true gift! (her bio at the end of the details) You will come away with a deeper appreciation for your dancing as well as refined skills and body movement. Classes will be held in two locations:


Saturday, December 1st 
Styling A La Cubana              1pm - 2:30pm
Every culture has a criteria for people to look their best, and Cubans are no exception. This workshop is about letting go of certain bodily habits and embracing a new way to feel the music and to express your joy for life. It is subdivided into three sections: warm-up, exercise/practice, and line dance. You can adjust the degree of difficulty to your individual practice. $12

A Taste of Cuba: A Musicality Workshop           2:45pm - 4:15pm
A country with more than 20 popular music and dance genres, Cuba is an inexhaustible source of cultural convergences. This workshop introduces dancers to son, son montuno, cha-cha-chá, mambo, rumba and comparsa. In addition to sampling these genres, you will have access to a brief historical background, a practice on body feeling a la Cubana, and an organic introduction to the clave beat (dancing on the 4). $12

Sunday, December 2nd

 
Body Movement for Follows 1pm - 2:30pm
This training will focus on rhythm, from musical cues to their corporal translation. The highlight of this workshop is the exploration of breathing techniques for dancers. Subdivided into three sections (warm-up, exercises, and incorporation), it borrows from modern dance, rumba, son, timba, Afro-Cuban religious heritage, West African dance, and yoga.

Casino On the Four  2:45pm - 4:15pm 
Moving to the clave beat is the ultimate experience in Cuban social dancing. This workshop elaborates on emphasis steps, the dynamic between follows and leads, and the most significant basic cues for leads and follows ... all in clave. $12



Body Movement for Leads  4:30pm - 6pm 
This workshop is concerned with body-weight awareness and its shifting through cross-body training and a thorough look to the dancing posture a la cubana. It is subdivided into warm-up, exercises, and the incorporation of this insight to Cuban social dancing. $12

Bio for Maiensy Sanchez
Maiensy began teaching popular Cuban music and dance while working at the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores (TEC) de Monterrey, Mexico, in 1996. She created and developed a curriculum for the International Programs department’s exchange students. In 1999, she pioneered the Cuban style of dance instruction in the Seattle area. As a born-and-raised Cuban, and having grown up in a family of stage artists, she adds her first-hand experience to a class environment that is as meaningful as it is entertaining. Her teaching style incorporates her background in socio-cultural anthropology and 13 years of professional music training. Her teaching method draws from her biological father, an established stage actor, and her father Fernando Alonso, creator of the Cuban School of Ballet and one of the founders of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, both currently on the island. Maiensy has received training in ballet, jazz, modern dance, flamenco and West African dance. She has performed at the New Orleans International Ballet Conference (as dance partner/assistant to master Roberto Borrell) and a number of local venues, including Benaroya Hall.
